Embley Hampshire – High School

Embley Hampshire – High School

Description

Embley Hampshire

We are academically ambitious for our children and our teaching and learning strategy has been carefully designed to help them achieve their personal best, have an appropriate belief in oneself while being compassionate of those around them.

We are an all-through school, which means your child can join our Nursery from the age of 2 and continue their education through our Prep School, Senior School and Sixth Form, leaving us at the age of 18 ready to take their place in the world and effect meaningful change.

Our main entry points are Reception, Year 7, 9 and Sixth Form but we also accept applications for other year groups depending on availability. Boarding places are available to pupils from Year 7.

We expect all our pupils to develop independence, responsibility and a spirit of enquiry from a young age but we cannot foster these ideals without giving our children a meaningful opportunity to practise them. From class representation in student councils our students also lead on national conferences, address national education fora, trade on the London Stock Exchange in our Stock Market Investment Club and develop their economic and business acumen through our MBA Experience in partnership with Winchester University. They also lead award winning sailing, drama and golf programmes and, in co-operation with staff, plan and manage business tendering and projects. Our children have the opportunity to be their best and leave us with a character that will inform the rest of their lives.

Our students go out into the world with a sense of purpose. They leave us with academic achievement, personal fulfilment and the desire to make a difference.

Our admissions process has been carefully designed so that we can understand every child’s academic abilities, passions and talents. This holistic approach allows us to make sure every child is well suited to Embley life.

We welcome all new families to come and visit us, to meet our staff and pupils and to see our teaching and learning in action.

Step 1. Register for a place

Families are encouraged to register their children as soon as possible. To do this, you will need to complete a short form and pay a non-refundable registration fee. Your child will then be placed on the appropriate admissions application list (registration does not guarantee a place at the school).

Step 2. Attend a taster day

Taster days provide a perfect opportunity for children to discover Embley for themselves, meet their prospective classmates and teachers and take part in a range of lessons and experiences. We’ll also provide feedback to let you know how the day has gone. Due to Covid-19 measures, it may not always be possible to offer a taster day. However, we will offer opportunities for children to experience Embley in a range of ways virtually instead.

Step 3. Reference requests and school reports

Upon receipt of your registration, and with your permission, we will request a reference from your child’s current school. We will also ask to see a copy of your child’s most recent school report.

Step 4. Complete our entrance assessments

Prep School assessments
Children applying for Year 1 to 6 will sit our written English and Maths papers which are designed to test age-appropriate National Curriculum content. Children joining Nursery and Reception are not formally tested.

Senior School assessments
These assessments comprise an English written paper and a computer-based cognitive ability test.

The cognitive ability test measures how a child can think in areas known to make a difference in achievement and learning. The test is split into four sections: verbal reasoning (words), quantitative reasoning (numbers), non-verbal reasoning (shapes) and spatial ability (objects and space).

Year 8 and 10 applicants and all children wishing to join our Senior School mid-academic year will sit an additional written Maths paper.

We hold an assessment morning for entry into Year 7 and 9 each year in January. Applicants for other year groups will be assessed in accordance with the time of the application.

Sixth Form entry criteria
All candidates are expected to achieve a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9 to 5, including English and Maths, and at least grade 7 in the A Level subjects to be studied, or equivalent subjects.

Interviews
Senior School and Sixth Form applicants will be invited to attend a short interview with a member of our Senior Leadership Team. There is no need for any coaching for this interview, we encourage children to be spontaneous with their answers. During the interview, candidates will be encouraged to talk about their motivations for joining Embley and their wider interests and hobbies, as well as providing an opportunity to engage in friendly academic discussion.

Step 5. Offer of a place

If your child is offered a place at Embley you will need to complete all the paperwork included in our acceptance pack which will be sent to you at the time of offer. We will ask for payment of an acceptance deposit to secure the place.

A waiting list may be available for children who have reached an appropriate standard in our entrance assessments where the year group is full.

Progress through the school

All pupils who join us at one of our younger entry points will enjoy a full career at Embley, proceeding through our Senior School to study GCSEs and onto our Sixth Form to study A Levels.

All pupils will sit our entrance assessments for entry into Year 7 at the Senior School and progression onto the Sixth Form is normally assured by a combination of appropriate behaviour, hard work and academic success.
